The first Tap Tap Revenge game really struck a chord with many iPhone gamers, and went on to be one of the most successful titles on the platform. Now the sequel has burst onto the stage - and it's even better than the original.
Tap Tap Revenge 2 is a revamped version of the original format, in which you need to hit a series of falling balls in time with the music. If you hit them at the right time then you'll score points, but if you're out of kilter you'll have points taken away.
Tap Tap Revenge 2 adds a new 'arrow' element to the game, where you need to roll your iPhone in a certain direction depending on where the falling arrow points. This certainly enhances the gameplay and turns Tap Tap into more of an art form.
The overall playing experience in Tap Tap Revenge 2 is much improved on the original, thanks to a new gaming engine. The board has a more vibrant, 3D look, with lights and explosions that intensify as you build up combos.
The social aspect of Tap Tap Revenge has also been ramped up in version 2. You can now play multiplayer in three different ways - via a twisted, split-screen two player interface, by challenging your friends to beat your score via an email button, or by going online and playing against others in the Online Play mode. There's even a new 'career' mode where you can chart your achievements over time.
Tap Tap Revenge 2 boasts a whole new catalog of music content. It comes with just a few preloaded tracks, but at present there are more than 150 additional tunes you can download and install into Tap Tap Revenge 2 for free. Admittedly, there aren't many mainstream acts featured in the catalog, although you will find some lesser-known stuff from big artists such as Kaiser Chiefs, Daft Punk, Death Cab for Cutie, The Crystal Method, and Nine Inch Nails.
I have to say that Tap Tap Revenge is one of the most addictive, polished and intensely enjoyable iPhone games around.
